Tom Turino was a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1987 to 2014. He has been playing old-time banjo since 1974, as well as a number of other instruments and styles since then, Peruvian kena and charango, Shona mbira, single-row and triple-row button accordions, finger-style guitar, and most recently fiddle. Formerly a bluegrasser, Shannon Arnold, native of Lexington, KY, plays guitar with Tom in the duo Double Dog Dare. Once a French teacher, she has begun learning and performing Cajun songs accompanied by Tom on accordion and fiddle; they also play old-time, blues, and original tunes with Tom on banjo, fiddle, and guitar. Tom plays with his fiddler son Matt and they have several CDs of original fiddle and banjo tunes that are available on CDbaby. Tom and Shannon live in Stanton, Kentucky and perform in the Lexington–eastern Kentucky region.
